Dover Castle, the White Cliffs, and Canterbury Cathedral are three of England's most significant historic sites — and they sit within 20 miles of each other in Kent. Done properly, you can cover all three in a single day from London. This is the most efficient itinerary, whether you join a guided day tour or travel independently.
Option A: By Guided Day Tour from London (Recommended)
The easiest approach. Guided coach tours depart central London early in the morning, handle all transport and timed entry, and return by evening. Two stand out:

Option B: Independent from London by Train
7:30am — Depart London
High-speed Southeastern service from London St Pancras International to Dover Priory, approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. Book your Dover Castle ticket online before you leave to save 15% and guarantee entry.
9:00am — Arrive Dover Priory
Bus route 15 or 15A from Dover Priory to Castle Hill Road takes 4 minutes. The castle opens at 10am — use any wait to check the Secret Wartime Tunnels tour timetable for the day.
10:00am — Secret Wartime Tunnels (First)
Enter at 10am and go straight to the tunnels. Pick up your guided tour slot at the entrance. The first tour of the day is least busy. Allow 45 minutes: you'll walk through Vice-Admiral Ramsay's Operations Room where Dynamo was directed, the communications centre, the WWII underground hospital, and the window cut into the cliff face through which Ramsay watched the evacuation. This is the single most powerful experience at Dover Castle.
Pick up your tunnel tour slot time at the main entrance immediately on arrival. In peak season the later tours fill by mid-morning. Don't leave this until after the Great Tower visit or you may miss it.
11:00am — The Great Tower
Allow 45–60 minutes. Move through the recreated royal apartments: the armoury and stores on the ground floor, Henry II's great hall with hologram courtiers on the second floor, the private royal chambers on the third, and the roof with panoramic views across the castle, Dover harbour, and — on clear days — the French coastline 21 miles away.
From the roof of the Great Tower on a clear day, you can see the coast of France. The English Channel at its narrowest is 21 miles wide here — and on the clearest days, individual features of the French coastline are visible to the naked eye.
12:00pm — Roman Pharos and Spur Viewpoint
Walk to the Roman Pharos lighthouse (built c. AD 50, still 40 feet tall) and the adjacent Saxon church of St Mary in Castro — 15 minutes. Then find the Spur viewpoint on the north side for the best photograph of the full castle with the White Cliffs behind it. Picnic lunch on the clifftop grounds if you've brought food.
1:15pm — White Cliffs of Dover
Head east to the National Trust White Cliffs visitor centre at Langdon Cliffs (25-minute walk from the castle, or 5-minute taxi). The cliff walk to the South Foreland Lighthouse viewpoint and back takes 1–1.5 hours. Stay behind the safety barriers — the chalk erodes unpredictably and the drop in places is 350 feet.
Wear proper walking shoes for the White Cliffs. The coastal path is uneven and slippery after rain. The National Trust car park at Langdon Cliffs is free for National Trust members.
3:00pm — Travel to Canterbury
From Dover bus station (15-minute walk from the White Cliffs visitor centre, or taxi), regular buses run to Canterbury in 35–40 minutes.
3:45pm — Canterbury Cathedral
Canterbury Cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the oldest Christian buildings in England. Allow 1–1.5 hours. Key sights: the Altar of the Sword's Point (site of Becket's martyrdom), the Trinity Chapel, the Norman crypt, and the cloisters. Entry currently £19.50 adult. Last entry typically around 5pm; confirm on arrival.
5:30pm — Canterbury Old Town
Thirty minutes through Burgate, Mercery Lane, and the medieval streets gives you the Canterbury that Henry II and Thomas Becket knew. The Westgate Towers and the river Stour alongside the Weavers' House are worth seeing in early evening light.
6:30pm — Return to London
Canterbury West station (15-minute walk) runs frequent trains to London St Pancras via Ashford International, approximately 1 hour. Back in London by 8pm.
If You Have Only Half a Day at Dover Castle
Prioritise: (1) Secret Wartime Tunnels — the most historically important and unique experience on site; (2) Great Tower roof — for the view and the Henry II exhibitions; (3) Spur viewpoint — for the photograph. All three in 2.5 hours.
