Best Time to Visit Dover Castle in 2026

The short answer: late April to May, or September to early October. Long opening hours, reasonable weather for the White Cliffs walk, and meaningfully shorter queues for the Secret Wartime Tunnels than peak summer. But the right month depends on what you want from the visit.

Month-by-Month Guide

January & February — Quietest, Limited Access

Dover Castle operates Saturday and Sunday only in January and February, 10am–4pm. If you visit on an open day, you'll have the site almost to yourself. This suits visitors who want photographs without crowds, or who have a deep interest in the history and aren't deterred by cold weather. The Secret Wartime Tunnels are cool year-round (10–12°C), so the outdoor temperature matters less once you're underground.

March — Opens Up, Still Quiet

From late February, the castle runs Wednesday to Sunday. From 28 March 2026, it opens daily with extended 10am–5pm hours. Mid-to-late March is still off-peak — the days are getting longer, the clifftop is green, and tunnel tours are well-spaced. Visit in the second half of March and you catch the summer schedule with none of the crowds.

April & May — Our Top Pick

April and May are the sweet spot. Daily opening, 10am–5pm. Wildflowers on the clifftop. School groups are present on weekdays but manageable. The Secret Wartime Tunnels are accessible without a 30–45 minute wait. Off-peak prices apply (adult from £23.60). The Kent countryside on the London day tours is at its most photogenic.

May bank holiday weekends are busier — if you visit then, arrive at 10am sharp and go to the tunnel tour first.

💡 Did You Know?

The White Cliffs are particularly dramatic in spring, when low-angled light catches the chalk face. The Spur viewpoint on the castle's north side frames the Great Tower with the cliffs behind it — one of the most photographed angles in Kent, and best in morning light.

June, July & August — Peak Season

Summer brings the longest opening hours, live history performances on selected weekends, and the best weather for cliff walks. The trade-offs: the Secret Wartime Tunnels fill fastest on summer weekends — arrive at 10am or miss the first tour. The car park (200 spaces) can fill by mid-morning in July and August. Peak admission prices apply from 26 May through 28 August.

If you're visiting with children or want the full events programme — including the live Henry II court performances (selected weekends, 23 May–12 July) — summer is worth the extra planning.

September & October — Second Best Pick

Early September is effectively still summer, with full daily opening and long hours, but noticeably fewer visitors than August. Tunnel tours become accessible again without extended waits. Off-peak prices apply from 1 September. October brings the most dramatic skies on the cliffs and excellent photography conditions. Hours run to 5pm through 24 October, then shorten to 4pm.

💡 Did You Know?

September and October are the best months for seeing France from the castle. Summer haze is gone, temperatures are mild for cliff walking, and on clear autumn mornings the coastline between Calais and Cap Gris-Nez is distinctly visible 21 miles away.

November to Mid-March — Winter Pattern

After 1 November, Dover Castle reduces to Saturday and Sunday only. Mid-week visits are not possible. The castle closes entirely 24–26 December, reopens daily 27 December – 1 January 2027, then returns to the weekend-only pattern until late February.

When to Avoid

If any of these dates are unavoidable, book a guided Dover Castle tour from London rather than self-driving — timed entry is handled for you.

What Time of Day Is Best?

Open at 10am and go straight to the Secret Wartime Tunnels. In peak season, the last tunnel tour departs around 3:30pm — don't leave it until afternoon. The Great Tower is most atmospheric in softer late-afternoon light. The clifftop viewpoints are best in morning light from the east-facing Spur, and late afternoon from the west-facing main walls.

✅ Useful Tip

Pick up your tunnel tour slot time immediately on arrival — it's posted at the main entrance each morning. Don't leave it until after the Great Tower or you may miss the last available tour of the day. A guided day tour from London handles all timing for you.
